About Merioth

Merioth Nduhu trained in ‘value added products’ at the Nairobi Beekeeping Institute and had set up her own honey business, ‘Nomo’, selling honey, hive products and beekeeping equipment. She also provides consultancy services to private beekeepers.

Through the mentoring of Bees Abroad, Merioth has shared her expertise for over 20 years – training over 50 community groups in Kenya in ‘hive value addition’. This means delivering all our training related to value-added products such as making balms, soaps and hair conditioners using hive outputs such as beeswax and honey.

She also delivers training on how to measure and maintain high quality in the production of the products so that groups can also obtain certification. This is especially important for the rural communities we work with as they often require locally appropriate processes and tools for such processes.

Helping to create empowered women entrepreneurs is a central value of the Bees Abroad philosophy. Merioth acts as a teacher, trainer, mentor and above all role model for women beekeepers showing how the craft can open up a new potential for them as enterpreneurs.

Example: Nyakach Sustainable Beekeepers

The Nyakach women beekeepers group

We visited the Nyakach Women beekeepers in 2024, four years after the project was completed. We spent a day with them talking all things beekeeping and business. To our surprise, we found out that their top selling product locally, was the hair conditioner, taught to them by none other than Merioth herself.

All income generated by their beekeeping activities is used to bolster the savings and loan group pot, allowing members to invest independently in diversifying their income and improving their own quality of life.

During that same visit, we had the opportunity to spend time with the whole team and reminisce some of the older days but also, and more importantly, we had the opportunity to discuss the future of our collaboration in Kenya.
