Building Skills, Hives and Livelihoods: Beekeeping with the Maasai of Laikipia

Building Skills, Hives and Livelihoods: Beekeeping with the Maasai of Laikipia

May 15, 2025

In Kenya’s Laikipia County, the Maasai Community is building more than just beehives—they're building skills, confidence, and sustainable livelihoods.

In 2024, the group made up of five ranges, approached Bees Abroad in order to seek support in fulfilling their 10-year plan and mission: eradicate poverty and foster sustainable innovation. Together, we have co-designed this 3-year project, led by our local partners, Bees4Kenya.

The project has just, officially started with its first steps:

  • Classroom training on beekeeping and;

  • Constructing three box hives under the guidance of the trainers, while the group is preparing to build 22 more before their next training session.

Through this project, we aim to build local capacity and sustainable income for the families. But the work is about more than income—it’s about inclusion and resilience.

  • 80% of project members are women, many of whom are entering beekeeping for the first time.

  • Over half the group are young adults, bringing energy and long-term vision to the project.

While most participants already own at least one hive, only 17% have access to proper tools—and almost none had received formal training on modern hive management or honey processing. This project is changing that.

By equipping members with tools, knowledge, and local leadership opportunities, we want to encourage sustainable agriculture, improved food security, and greater climate resilience in a region hit hard by drought and shifting weather patterns.
